1. Hi, I'm not very good with computers, so when something goes wrong I have no idea how to fix my mac =( Today, for no reason I can understand, my drag and drop function stopped working. I can't drag things (applications, documents, images) to/from the trash. I can't drag images from websites.
2. A panel will drop down. Set the Format type to APFS for an SSD or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for an HDD. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

as far as windows users go. i have no idea what that means, but i've been sending attachments to windows users every day, multiple times a day and have had no errors reported to me.

Manitcle mac os. I just sent two identical emails, one with each method (D&D, Attach) and the results were identical. I'd suspect it merely doesn't send the resource fork in the case that the file has one, which tends to mess up Windows users 'cause they see two files not one, one of which is readable, the other is 'garbage' to them. I send a PDF'd x-mas list to my mother in-law who thought she was missing something as two files showed up in her email, one that did nothing. I'm assuming the 'send Widows friendly.' bit will keep out that erroneous extra attachment.
I will definitely make use of this for emailing my less-than cyber-fluent Windows using relatives in the future to save me from an erroneous extra explanation ;) Finder show macintosh hd.

You can set mail.app to always use 'windows' friendly attachments, by going:
Mail.app->Edit->Attachments->Always Send Windows Friendly Attachments
I suspect, if this is turned 'on', then whether you drag/drop or use the attach button it will always send them in a windows friendly way.

I believe it has to do with the resource forks. I've had complaints from Windows users that they've gotten attachments which they couldn't read - in addition to the one I sent. So it must be creating second attachments from the resource forks, which show up on Windows machines, but not on Macs.

.but resource forks are really a thing of the past. Apple has done away with resource forks since OS 9.
It's true that in the past, anything with a resource fork would have to be stuffed or bin hexed for the net. but OS X doesn't use resource forks (if you exclude carbon apps, of course), right?

The most obvious place where ressource fork are still used in macosx is in non generic icons. If you change the icon of a file to something else than the generic icon, this icon resides in a ressource. I believe all HFS+ mete-data will be send this way, as a ressource file, by mail.
Some vintage file type are also ressources. .icns, .pict, .webloc to name just a few. You snuck a water bottle into the movie theater mac os.

IMHO 'Send Windows Friendly Attachments' is a misnomer, and might put many Mac users off.
The truth is that Mac mail clients have traditionally sent Internet-unfriendly emails, by adding a resource fork that is meaningless and confusing to _all_ other operating systems out there. The resource fork should stay where it is usefully meaningful, on the Mac. The _default_ should be to strip it off -- unless you know for sure you're sending to another Mac system.
Bottom line: there shouldn't be a menu item to 'Send Internet friendly attachments'. Mail.app should just do this -- optionally with an override for the special case where the recipient is known to be able to make use of resource forks.

I send a lot of email in a certain asian language for which I am so grateful for i18n support in OSX. (It's one of the primary reasons I left my gentoo boxen behind for my nice iBook) That said, some of my friends who are stuck using windows (would like to switch but their business runs on it) can't read attachments with unicode filenames. In fact, they can't even manipulate the files to give them a different name. The chinese room mac os. I have to re-send the message using either some broken proprietary encoding *cough*S-JIS*cough* or else rename it to use the boring ascii set.-_- wonder if the fix is for that?
